Funder: Ministry of Education, Malaysia through the Long-Term Research Grant (LRGS) 2012 - 2016
What the project is about:
As a sub-project of the Enhancing Hajj Performance: Novel Crowd Management System and Reduction of Related Health Problems research, the general objective of this project is to investigate the psychological factors of a crowd within the psychosocial domain as they apply to mass-gathering settings. In particular, we are interested in identifying the types of crowd behaviour among hujjaj during Hajj time, the psychosocial factors that influence their crowd behaviour, and the typology of behaviour and emotions of different hujjaj groups.
Six studies were conducted, involving semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions as well as scale development and surveys. These studies provide essential data on human factor that are predictive of crowd management during hajj time. Salient inputs are also obtained for policy formulation on hujjaj management in terms of their safety, health, and hospitality.
Throughout this project, we have also established networking linkages with seven international and two national agencies and institutions.

Insights for impact
The data on psychosocial aspects of crowd provide input on the way forward to improve the hujjaj management system, complementing the data found by researchers in other hajj-related research (e.g., health, ICT, and engineering).
The project has also warranted the need for the development of specific data collection instruments that have not been taken up before. This resulted in the development of two instruments, i.e., Hajj Crowd Behaviour (HCB) Scale and a scale on psychosocial, sociological, and behavioural predictors of crowd behaviour.
