Attitudes Towards Religiosity:
The IIUM Religiosity Scale
(The IIUMRelS)

What the project is about:

The objective of the research is to produce a religiosity scale specific for use by Muslims based on a sound Islamic theoretical framework. The 10-item IIUM Religiosity Scale (IIUMRelS) measures a Muslim’s religious attitude based on the three concepts of iman (cognitive and belief system), islam (acts of worship), and ihsan (affective state). These three concepts, outlined in Hadith Jibril, are assumed to be the defining features of Islam and are one way of conceptualising religiosity. The scale is constructed such that the items are able to measure a Muslim’s understanding and practice of Islam. As the religion of Islam is defined as a way of life, the IIUMRelS include not only items that are ritual in nature but also items that depict an individual’s understanding and practice of Islam in a day-to-day context.

The IIUMRelS can also be used as a general measure of one’s religious attitude (the concepts of islam, iman, and ihsan fall neatly within the usual attitude domains of affect, behaviour and cognition, with affect = ihsan, behaviour = islam, cognition = iman). The project includes four studies that started with scale conceptualisation, item generation, and scale refinement up to scale validation and field-testing.

Insights for impact

  • The ©IIUMRelS is suitable for self-assessment and continuous personal development, as well as serve as a guide to improving one’s religiosity and spiritual growth.

  • One of the major strengths of the scale lies in its short scale length and its simplicity to use.

  • With the inclusion of islam, iman, and ihsan items, the scale allows a comprehensive assessment of the religious beliefs and practices of Muslims.
